A highly infectious strain of bird flu, H5N1, has begun spreading among dairy cows in the US, presenting an ideal opportunity for the pathogen to adapt and potentially infect humans more easily. Experts have long been concerned about this virus, which has claimed the lives of around half of its nearly 900 documented cases worldwide since 2003.
