Bird Flu Spreads in Ohio, CDC Warns Public

Ohio has reported its first human case of bird flu, also known as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI). An adult male from Mercer County was infected with the virus after coming into contact with deceased commercial poultry. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention consider the risk to the general public low, but people who work with birds are at greater risk.

To prevent bird flu, avoid direct contact with wild birds or sick/poorly animals. If you must be around them, follow proper precautions and seek guidance from local health departments or veterinarians. Commercial poultry owners should practice good biosecurity measures to prevent contact between their birds and wild birds.

Symptoms of bird flu in humans are typically mild and include respiratory issues. People who have been exposed to a sick or dead bird should monitor themselves for new symptoms and contact their healthcare provider if they develop them. Properly cooked poultry and dairy products can be safely consumed, but follow food safety guidelines to prevent illness.

The Ohio Department of Health is working with the CDC to track and respond to bird flu cases in the state. The department’s mission is to advance the health and well-being of all Ohioans, while promoting a safe food supply and healthy livestock and plants.
