Bird Flu Tainted Pet Food Recalled Nationwide

A batch of raw frozen pet food from Northwest Naturals has been recalled nationwide after testing positive for bird flu. The product, Feline Turkey Recipe, was sold in 12 states and Canada, including Oregon, where a house cat died after consuming it.

The cat’s owner reported symptoms consistent with H5N1 bird flu, which was confirmed through genome sequencing. The virus matched the cat’s DNA, indicating direct transmission from the pet food.

Consumers who bought the recalled product are advised to discard it immediately and contact their place of purchase for a refund. The recall affects products packaged in two-pound plastic bags with “best if used by” dates of May 21, 2026, or June 23, 2026.

While no human cases have been directly linked to the incident, those in contact with the infected cat are being monitored for flu symptoms. In contrast, more than 60 people in eight states have been infected with mild bird flu illnesses, with one person hospitalized due to a severe case in Louisiana.
