Massachusetts has declared bird flu widespread as outbreaks spread across the state, prompting officials to urge the public to take precautions. The highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) is suspected to be causing deaths in both wild and domestic birds, particularly raptors, waterfowl, and other aquatic birds.
While humans are rarely infected with avian influenza viruses, people who have direct contact with animals infected with HPAI are at risk. Officials recommend avoiding handling wildlife, especially sick or dead birds, and keeping pets indoors to prevent exposure. Licensed hunters can minimize the risk of wildlife diseases by following best practices when handling and processing game.
The bird flu outbreak has also been detected in other states, including California, where a new strain H5N9 was found at a duck farm in Merced County, and Georgia, where a commercial poultry operation confirmed a positive case. Officials are working to mitigate the spread of the disease and ensure normal activities can resume as quickly as possible.
Residents can find more information on the public health impact of bird flu by visiting the Department of Public Health’s Avian Influenza webpage or calling the Division of Epidemiology at 617-983-6800.
