James Howells, a software engineer who is pursuing a legal battle over his $775 million Bitcoin fortune, has expressed interest in buying the landfill site where the stash was allegedly dumped.
Howells initially sought permission from authorities to excavate the site and recover 8,000 BTC, but the court denied his request due to environmental concerns. The decision came as a surprise after he had argued against excavation.
The incident dates back to 2013, when Howells’ ex-girlfriend accidentally put the hard drive containing the Bitcoin coins in the trash. Howells turned to Donald Trump for help after losing his legal bid, but has now shifted focus towards purchasing the landfill site. The 8,000 Bitcoins are worth $872.91 million at their all-time high price and $775.84 million at the prevailing market price.
The Newport City Council did not immediately comment on Howells’ proposal to buy the site.
