Bitcoin Lost Fortune Tip Up for Sale After Court Rejection

A British computer engineer who lost £620m-worth of Bitcoins in a 2013 tip is now seeking to buy the site where he believes his fortune is buried. James Howells, from Newport, claims his ex-girlfriend accidentally threw away the hard drive containing the lost Bitcoins.

Howells’ case was dismissed by a judge, but he’s still planning to appeal. The landfill site is set to be closed in 2025-26 for a solar farm project, which would power the council’s new bin lorries.

The landfill holds over 1.4 million tonnes of waste, and Howells believes his Bitcoins are likely buried within an area of around 100,000 tonnes. He has discussed purchasing the site with investment partners and is exploring options to turn it into a Bitcoin-themed attraction or storage facility.

The decision to close the landfill was initially met with surprise from Howells, who claimed that the council’s concerns about him searching for the lost Bitcoins were hypocritical.
