Rekha Gupta, a 50-year-old MLA from Haryana, has been elected as the Delhi Chief Minister after 48 MLAs unanimously elected her the legislature party leader. She is now set to become India’s second woman CM and fourth woman CM of Delhi.
Born in Nandgarh village in Jind district of Haryana, Rekha is a first-time MLA from the Shalimar Bagh constituency of Delhi. She has experience as a former student union chief at Delhi University and a long-standing RSS worker.
Rekha’s election marks a historic moment for the BJP, as she will be the only woman CM in any state currently ruled by the party. After meeting with Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, she staked claim to form the government and will be sworn in on Thursday.
In a statement posted on X, Rekha expressed her gratitude to the top leadership for entrusting her with the responsibility of CM’s post, promising to work with honesty, integrity, and dedication for Delhi’s development. Home Minister Amit Shah congratulated her, expressing faith that she would work towards making Delhi one of the world’s top capitals.
Amitabh Kejriwal, Arvind Kejriwal also congratulated her, saying his party will support the CM in every work for the development and welfare of the people of Delhi.
