Renowned writer and showrunner Charlie Brooker has expressed his optimism about the future of Black Mirror, despite its rapid evolution in response to current technological advancements.
With only a couple of years since the last series aired, Brooker believes that the pace of change makes it difficult for many people, including lawmakers, to keep up. Since the first episode premiered in 2011, technology has advanced significantly, with Meta AI embedded in WhatsApp and smartwatches on series 10.
Brooker views this rapid development as a source of inspiration for new storylines. He believes that audiences are already experiencing these technologies firsthand, making it easier to craft relatable narratives. The show’s ability to tap into the concerns surrounding technology’s impact on society is also seen as a significant advantage.
Corrin and Brooker agree that AI raises crucial questions about its potential use in creative industries. While there are valid fears about automation replacing human artists, they believe that AI can be a valuable tool when used responsibly.
Brooker also explores another favorite theme – gaming – with the new series seven episode Plaything. This episode features Asim Chaudhry and Will Poulter reprising their roles from 2018’s interactive film Bandersnatch.
The seventh series of Black Mirror is set to premiere on Netflix on Thursday, April 10th.
