Black Myth’s Wukong Fails to Claim Game of the Year Prize

Black Myth: Wukong, China’s first AAA video game, has sparked heated debate after losing the top prize at The Games Awards (TGA) 2024. Despite being nominated for four awards, including Best Action Game, which it won, Black Myth failed to take home the coveted Game of the Year award.

The action role-playing game, developed by Game Science and released in August, faced stiff competition from other notable titles like Astro Bot, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. In the end, Japanese game Astro Bot took home the prize.

Chinese gamers expressed their disappointment on social media platforms, with many feeling that Black Myth’s sales figures – over 10 million copies in its first month – made it an unlikely winner. However, TGA organizers clarified that the Game of the Year award is determined by a blended voting jury of over 100 global media and influencer outlets, who give 90% weighting to their votes.

Despite not winning the top prize, Black Myth’s success marked a significant milestone for Chinese game developers in the gaming industry.
