Dr. Amber Johnson Avery is a trailblazer in the field of computer science, becoming the first Black woman to earn a doctorate in the discipline from Purdue University. Her journey was marked by perseverance and determination, overcoming discouragement and self-doubt along the way.
Growing up in Jackson, Mississippi, Avery developed a passion for problem-solving and tinkering with electronics at a young age. She credits her upbringing, which emphasized the importance of community and hospitality, for helping her navigate her academic and professional pursuits.
Avery’s journey to becoming a doctorate holder was not without its challenges. Despite facing discouragement from some who doubted her ability to succeed in computer science, she persevered and ultimately earned her Ph.D. through a combination of hard work and determination.
After completing her doctoral program, Avery landed a position as a software engineer but eventually quit to pursue her own projects. She now works with Dr. Nashlie Sephus at the Bean Path, where she is focused on efforts to revitalize Jackson.
Avery’s latest venture, NextGenEdu, Inc., aims to build an AI-driven career discovery platform that provides personalized guidance for students. The startup recently received a $304,993 Small Business Innovation Research Phase I grant through the U.S. National Science Foundation.
Avery plans to use the grant funds to conduct research and development on her platform, working closely with local high-school and college students, psychologists, and career counselors to ensure that the product meets the needs of its users.
Through her work, Avery aims to inspire and empower individuals from underrepresented communities to pursue careers in STEM fields. “We need to know their stories,” she said, emphasizing the importance of listening to and understanding the experiences of those who may not be traditionally represented in STEM education.
Avery’s story is a testament to the power of determination and perseverance in the face of adversity. Her work has the potential to make a lasting impact on the lives of individuals and communities across the country.
