Blendo, the studio behind the cult classic indie game Thirty Flights of Loving, is back with its latest release, Skin Deep, a first-person stealth action game that combines elements of genre-bending gameplay with slapstick comedy. The game follows Nina Pasadena, a former bounty hunter turned insurance collector who must take out space pirates to rescue talking cats trapped in lockboxes.
Players are introduced to the basics through a quick tutorial and can then navigate the ship using a scanner to read fine print instructions on objects they can interact with. The gameplay involves picking up items, swapping between them, and using Nina’s throwing arm as her primary offense. With a unique blend of stealth and action, players must take down pirates without killing them, instead flushing their heads into toilets or sending them soaring into space.
The demo showed off the game’s bite-sized rescue missions, which involve navigating rooms, freeing cats, and escaping in an escape pod. What makes Skin Deep interesting is its miniature immersive sim approach, built around slapstick comedy. The encounters are short, but not linear, allowing players to crawl through vents and use items creatively to take out enemies.
Blendo’s signature blocky visuals add a unique touch to the game, making it almost like an indescribable crossover between Hotline Miami and Prey. With Skin Deep launching on April 30 for PC, fans of Blendo’s previous work will be excited to see another delightfully eccentric game that gets creative with genre.
