Blood Test for Colorectal Cancer Shows Promise in Large Study

A new investigational blood test has met primary endpoints in a large study, showing promise as a convenient and effective option for colorectal cancer screening in average-risk adults. The study, which evaluated 27,010 participants aged ≥ 45 years, found the blood test to have high sensitivity (79.2%) and specificity (91.5%) for detecting colorectal cancer and advanced neoplasia. However, its performance varied by type of lesion, with lower sensitivity for detecting precancerous lesions.

While the results are encouraging, experts caution that further research is needed to determine the optimal frequency for testing, cost-effectiveness, and comparative effectiveness compared to existing screening methods. The study’s findings will also be compared to other blood-based tests, such as Guardant Health’s Shield CRC test, to assess their relative performance.
