Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly replacing desk workers, making blue-collar jobs more attractive. A recent report by Microsoft found that users are relying on AI tools for “information gathering, writing, and communicating with others,” tasks also successfully completed by the AI.
However, blue-collar professionals who engage in physical work with people or machines are less likely to seek help from AI, putting them at lower risk of job impact. These roles include dishwashers, massage therapists, roofers, maids, and housekeeping cleaners.
According to a Gallup report, white-collar workers are more frequently using AI, with 27% frequent users, while frontline and production workers have seen flat growth in AI adoption. Microsoft’s researchers noted that their study focused on large language models (LLMs) and may not capture other AI applications affecting machine operation and monitoring tasks.
Future of work expert Ravin Jesuthasan said that blue-collar jobs are becoming more stable and attractive due to growing demand and increased technological requirements. He added that complex equipment operations in manufacturing roles now pay well and require technical skills, setting them apart from their grimy past.
