Blue-Footed Booby’s Secret Charm Captivates Reporter

NPR correspondent is obsessed with the blue-footed booby. Recently spotted in the Galápagos Islands, off Ecuador’s coast, this Pacific volcanic island home to many breeding couples has captivated the reporter. The bird’s unique features – from its gangly gait on land to precise diving skills at sea – have made a lasting impression.

Charles Darwin was fascinated by these seabirds nearly two centuries ago and featured them prominently in his theory of evolution. The avian’s ubiquitous caricatures plastered around Galápagos towns and signposts are also a testament to their enduring popularity.

NPR colleague Aya Batrawy described seeing the bird preen its feathers, saying “That’s life” – born with perfect footwear and self-scratching ability. The blue-footed booby’s charm is undeniable, captivating even the most seasoned travelers.
