The Columbus Blue Jackets stayed alive in the playoff hunt with a dominant 7-0 victory over the Washington Capitals at Nationwide Arena. With a win, the Jackets improved their chances of securing an Eastern Conference wild card spot.
The Blue Jackets outshouted the Capitals, who were missing star players Alex Ovechkin and Jakob Chychrun due to injury. Rookie goalie Jet Greaves secured his first career shutout as Columbus took a 3-0 lead after the first period.
Zach Werenski, Kent Johnson, and Adam Fantilli scored in the first period, while Fantilli added two more goals in the second, helping Columbus blow out Washington. James van Riemsdyk earned a “Gordie Howe Hat Trick” with a goal, assist, and fighting major.
The win moved the Blue Jackets to 83 points, but their playoff hopes remain uncertain as they await the outcome of the Montreal Canadiens’ game against the Maple Leafs on Saturday night.
