Blue Jays Land Max Scherzer on $15.5M Deal

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer to a one-year, $15.5 million contract. Scherzer, 41, joins the Blue Jays after two years with the Texas Rangers and brings a wealth of experience to the team’s pitching staff.

Scherzer has struggled with health issues in recent seasons, making only nine starts in 2024 due to shoulder fatigue. However, he remains a future Hall of Famer with a career record of 216-112 and 3,407 strikeouts. The Blue Jays’ front office hopes that Scherzer’s presence will help improve their pitching depth, which was ranked last season.

The team had pursued several big-name free agents in the offseason, including Juan Soto, Max Fried, Corbin Burnes, and Roki Sasaki, but ultimately came up empty-handed. The signing of Scherzer is seen as a notable move for the Blue Jays, who have struggled to win a playoff series in nine years.

While Scherzer’s deal may not be considered a blockbuster signing at his advanced age, it represents a significant addition to the team’s pitching staff. With Scherzer on board, the Blue Jays’ starter trio of Kevin Gausman, Jose Berrios, and Chris Bassitt could potentially return to form, helping the team climb out of their divisional struggles.
