Blue Man Group Closes New York Production After 17 Years

Blue Man Group, a beloved performance art troupe, is closing its iconic Astor Place Theater production in New York after an impressive 17-year run. The group, known for their bald caps, blue and black attire, and paint-splashing antics, has been entertaining audiences since 1991.

Despite achieving great success worldwide, with shows in over a dozen cities and multiple Grammy nominations, the group has remained committed to its core philosophy of “sublime and ridiculous” performance art. Chris Wink, one of the founding performers, expressed their approach: “We love the idea of a show that is sublime and ridiculous.”

The production’s closure marks the end of a chapter for Blue Man Group. Although long-running shows remain open in Boston, Las Vegas, and Berlin, the New York production will be permanently closed. The group’s owner, Cirque du Soleil, has stated that it made the difficult decision to shutter after re-evaluating its current standings. This move comes as Cirque du Soleil, which filed for bankruptcy in 2020, is now controlled by private equity firms.
