Bluesky Rolls Out New Verification System with Blue Check Marks

Bluesky is launching a new verification system, featuring the familiar blue check marks popularized by Twitter. The social platform has shifted from an unconventional self-verification process to a more traditional and proactive approach. Notable accounts such as government officials, news organizations, journalists, and celebrities will receive priority verification.

CEO Jay Graber explains that the system will initially be rolled out to these high-priority groups before a public form is introduced for users to request verification. The introduction of this formal process aims to reduce fraud and impersonation on Bluesky.

This new system is not groundbreaking but is a savvy move, as social networks have adopted similar blue check marks due to their effectiveness in verifying account legitimacy. By offering trusted verifier status to vetted organizations, Bluesky further decentralizes its approach while maintaining a practical solution for users.

The initial batch of publications verified through this process includes The New York Times and WIRED. Regardless of whether an account is verified by Bluesky or third-party “trusted verifiers,” the blue check mark will appear identical. This feature aims to increase transparency and trust on the platform.

Users can expect to see official blue check marks starting today, which will reassure public figures that Bluesky provides a safe digital environment.
