Bluesky Sees Record Growth in 2024 Amid Increased User Reports and Moderation Efforts

Bluesky, an open-source social media platform, has reported a significant increase in users and moderation efforts in 2024. According to its recent moderation report, the platform gained over 23 million users in just one year, with more than 6.48 million user reports filed by users.

To address the growing number of reports, Bluesky expanded its moderation team to nearly 100 staff members, including experts in child safety and other specialized areas. The company also implemented automation tools to tackle issues like impersonation and spam, while ensuring that human moderators play a key role in reviewing flagged content.

In 2024, Bluesky applied labels to over 5.5 million posts, categorizing them as sexual-figurative, harmful, rude, or spam. To enhance the user experience, the platform plans to introduce a new feature allowing users to appeal against objections within the app.

The platform’s growth was further boosted by an influx of users from Brazil in August 2024, following the ban of X (formerly Twitter). This led to a significant spike in reports, with over 50,000 reports per day. To address this issue, Bluesky aims to enhance automated detection systems and release an updated guideline to promote safety practices.

Launched in 2019 as a decentralized social media research project, Bluesky’s development accelerated after Elon Musk acquired X (formerly Twitter) in 2022. The platform was made available to the public in February 2024 and has experienced rapid growth since then.
