Researchers from CQUniversity recently watched every episode of the popular children’s cartoon Bluey to learn how storytelling can foster resilience in kids. The team, led by senior lecturer Bradley Smith, analyzed episodes 1-3 and found that nearly half of them featured resilience as a primary or secondary theme.
The study used the Grotberg Resilience Framework, which identifies three types of resilience: “I am,” “I have,” and “I can.” Researchers identified moments in Bluey where these themes were explored, such as when Bingo cries after accidentally breaking a toy. In this episode, her mom models emotional coaching, explaining that it’s okay to feel sad but also pick herself up.
The team found that resilience was the most prominent theme in Bluey, with “I have” resilience being portrayed slightly more than its “I can” and “I am” counterparts. Parents were often shown facilitating resilience-building conversations with their children through everyday interactions.
