Blumhouse has officially acquired the rights to the “Saw” franchise, bringing back creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell on board. The acquisition marks a significant change in the franchise’s future after Lionsgate had disagreements with Twisted Pictures over Saw XI’s release schedule.
Lionsgate owned 50% of the franchise’s rights, while Twisted Pictures held the other half. Blumhouse has now acquired Twisted’s portion, forming an alliance with Lionsgate to work together on “all future films, shows, and properties” featuring Jigsaw.
Wan and Whannell will guide the new direction of the franchise. Wan expressed excitement about returning to the series, stating that it holds a special place in his heart and allows him to “embrace the original spirit while pushing the legacy forward in bold ways.”
