Bob Dylan Biopic “A Complete Unknown” Wins Over Critics and Audiences

Director James Mangold had the unique experience of hearing Bob Dylan read his script aloud, but he’s unsure if Dylan will ever watch the movie. Mangold expressed skepticism about watching a biopic where someone is portraying him, saying it might be “weird as hell.” Despite this, Dylan did take the time to provide feedback on the script, including notes and suggestions on how to improve certain scenes.

In fact, Dylan went so far as to do a table read of the script with Mangold, taking note of his lines and even signing the final copy. Mangold described it as “a huge gift” and credited Dylan’s generosity for helping him delve deeper into the story.

The biopic has received widespread critical acclaim, with Rotten Tomatoes giving it an 78% “fresh” rating based on 202 reviews. Audiences have also responded positively, with a 96% “fresh” rating from users on the site. The film has earned numerous award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actor nods for Timothée Chalamet’s performance.

“A Complete Unknown” opened in theaters on Christmas Day, grossing $25.6 million from 2,835 theaters since its release. Starring Edward Norton, Elle Fanning, Monica Barbaro, and Boyd Holbrook alongside Timothée Chalamet, the film is a testament to the enduring legacy of Bob Dylan’s music and life.
