Boeing is in talks to sell as many as 500 planes to China, a deal that could finalize a long-awaited trade agreement between US and Chinese leaders. The proposal comes as Boeing works through its turnaround under CEO Kelly Ortberg, who took the helm following years of stalled China purchases.
The potential sale would be a significant development, signaling a thaw in tense Boeing-China aerospace trade. However, negotiations are complicated by ongoing trade tensions and the loss of top executive Alvin Liu in recent weeks. Carol Shen has been appointed interim president of Boeing China.
Boeing secured major jet orders from China between 2017-2021, but purchases stalled due to trade tensions and tariffs. A similar agreement pursued by President Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in 2023 ultimately fell through. If completed, this deal would be China’s first major purchase of Boeing jets since Trump’s visit during his previous term.
The proposal comes as US President Donald Trump has been pursuing trade agreements with certain nations. While a comprehensive deal with China remains elusive, Trump expressed optimism about a meeting with Xi Jinping before the end of the year, following a reported successful Treasury Secretary meeting.
