Astronauts Butch Wilmore and crew faced a precarious situation when the Boeing Starliner suffered thruster failures during its launch rendezvous with the International Space Station. The spacecraft lost control due to two failed thrusters, which normally would have mandated an abort of the docking attempt. However, NASA waived established flight rules.
Wilmore reported that the situation became critical after three thrusters failed, leaving the Starliner without forward control. With the crew stranded on the station and unable to pilot the spacecraft home, they had to wait for a ride back on one of the ISS’s crew rotation missions. The Starliner successfully docked with the ISS despite the challenges, but its return was delayed until September, when it would be brought back empty while the crew returned in March as part of NASA’s SpaceX Crew 9 mission.
