NASA plans to certify the troubled Boeing Starliner spacecraft by the end of 2025, despite past issues that stranded two astronauts on the International Space Station. The agency has made significant progress in addressing flight observations and anomalies, with over 70% closed.
However, thruster problems persist, which forced the Starliner to return empty after a test flight. Engineers are now focusing on fixing helium leaks and overheating issues at the White Sands Test Facility this spring and summer.
According to Steve Stich, Commercial Crew Program manager, the next Boeing flight is likely in late 2025 or early 2026, pending certification and scheduling for International Space Station missions. Despite facing challenges, NASA aims to recoup losses on the overbudget Starliner program by operating as many missions as possible with SpaceX taking over some ISS missions this year.
