Boeing is warning employees of its Space Launch System moon rocket program that they may face layoffs. The company expects to cut about 400 jobs as part of revisions to NASA’s Artemis program and cost expectations. Affected employees will receive 60-day notice of involuntary layoffs, but Boeing is trying to minimize job losses by redeploying staff across the company.
The $93 billion Artemis program aims to return astronauts to the moon for the first time since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. However, it has faced significant delays and cost overruns. The latest schedule changes have pushed back Artemis 2, a crewed flight around the moon, to September 2025, while Artemis 3, a lunar landing, is now scheduled for September 2026.
The layoffs are part of Boeing’s efforts to adapt to changing program requirements and costs. The company has been working closely with NASA to address these issues and minimize disruptions to its operations.
