Bong Joon Ho Returns with Sci-Fi Dark Comedy ‘Mickey 17’

South Korean director Bong Joon Ho premiered his highly anticipated sci-fi dark comedy, “Mickey 17”, in London on Thursday. This is his first movie since the Oscar-winning “Parasite”. Based on the novel “Mickey7” by Edward Ashton, the film stars Robert Pattinson as Mickey Barnes, a former pastry chef who must die and come back to life on a mission to colonize a distant planet.

Bong’s new film explores human life through science fiction. He says the story asks whether we can live more human lives despite our circumstances. The movie follows Mickey as he tries to reclaim his selfhood after experiencing traumatic events.

“Mickey 17” also stars Toni Collette, Naomi Ackie, Mark Ruffalo, and Steven Yeun. Bong made history with “Parasite”, becoming the first non-English language film to win Best Picture at the 2020 Oscars. Despite feeling pressure to make his next film, Bong remained calm and continued his usual process.

The movie features Mickey’s suicidal missions, including exposure to a deadly virus and a colony of creatures that are part-insect and part-mammal. Pattinson praises Bong’s unique take on storytelling and says the script was exciting to read. “Mickey 17” will begin its cinema rollout in South Korea on February 28 and other countries from March 5.
