Borderlands 4 Drops Toilet Humor Hint, Tone Shift Expected

The narrative director of Borderlands 4 has hinted at a cut-back on the series’ signature toilet humor, which has been a hallmark of the franchise since its inception in 2009. Gearbox’s Sam Winkler expressed his criticism of Borderlands 3’s excessive toilet humor, saying he remains “firm” in his stance.

The shift in tone is evident in the game’s latest trailer, unveiled at The Game Awards 2024, which features a darker narrative and more action-packed gameplay. The title introduces a new protagonist, The Timekeeper, a ruthless dictator who dominates the masses from on high. A world-altering catastrophe threatens his perfect Order, unleashing mayhem across Kairos, the most dangerous planet discovered so far in the Borderlands universe.

Borderlands 4 promises to deliver an ambitious and immersive experience, with intense action, diverse Vault Hunter skill trees, and a vast array of loot to explore. Players will be able to travel seamlessly between zones, engage in dynamic events, and discover side missions that encourage exploration. The game’s traversal mechanics add new dimensions to combat, while its vehicle system allows for thrilling racing sequences.

Gearbox boss Randy Pitchford describes Borderlands 4 as “about freedom and being badass,” promising a story that “serious[ly] kicks ass.” The game is set to launch in 2025, following the disastrous launch of the Borderlands movie.
