Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King topped the Christmas Day box office with $15 million, followed closely by filmmaker Robert Egger’s new vampire pic Nosferatu with a promising $11.6 million and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 with $10.7 million. As families return to theaters after holiday duties, expectations for both films are high.
Nosferatu is currently projected to come in third with up to $40 million for its five-day total, beating initial expectations of over $20 million. The film stars Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill SkarsgÄrd. Mufasa, on the other hand, is targeting a five-day gross north of $50 million.
The year-end box office has seen an encouraging trend, with the year-over-year deficit narrowing from 11% in mid-November to 4%. The holiday weekend has been a boon for the industry, following successful openings at Thanksgiving. A Complete Unknown earned $7.2 million on Wednesday, while Babygirl is aiming for a $7 million five-day opening.
A Fire Inside, an Amazon MGM Studios release written by Mufasa director Barry Jenkins, is looking at a $6 million five-day start. The post-holiday period has brought new life to the box office, with various films vying for attention as families return to theaters.
