Box Office Report 2024: Animated Films Take Center Stage

The 2024 box office was marked by a surprising absence of comic book films at the top spots. Instead, animated features and long-awaited sequels stole the spotlight. Despite Disney’s Marvel Studios scaling back its output, the year still had some notable success stories.

At number ten, Kung Fu Panda 4 topped the domestic box office with $193 million, thanks to Jack Black reprising his iconic role alongside a star-studded cast. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire came in at nine, grossing nearly $200 million domestically. Twisters followed closely, earning $267 million and landing in the eighth spot.

The year’s highest-grossing film was Pixar’s Inside Out 2, which raked in an impressive $652 million with its universal themes and emotional resonance. Other notable mentions include Despicable Me 4 ($361 million), Moana 2 ($366 million), Wicked ($392 million), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice ($300 million), Dune: Part Two ($282 million), and Deadpool & Wolverine ($636 million).

While DC’s Superman did not materialize in 2024, the studio is expected to kick off a revamped universe in 2025. In the meantime, animated films took center stage, providing entertainment for audiences across the globe.
