Box Office Sales Fall Short of Pandemic Heights in 2024

The 2024 box office has seen domestic ticket sales reach $8.7 billion, a decline of 3.3% from last year’s $9.04 billion and 23.5% from the pre-pandemic level of $11.3 billion. The decline is attributed to the lighter release schedule following the actors’ strikes in 2023.

Despite some strong performances from big franchise series, the box office was uneven throughout the year, with a healthy six-month run followed by a weaker autumn period. Disney’s “Inside Out 2” was the top-grossing film of the year, earning $652 million domestically and $1.69 billion globally.

Disney returned to the top spot in terms of studio market share, with a global gross of $5.46 billion. The company’s slate of films performed well beyond expectations, led by “Deadpool & Wolverine,” “Moana 2,” and “Dune: Part Two.” Warner Bros.’ “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” also had a strong run.

Family movies dominated the box office, with original stories experiencing an off year. Universal ranked second in terms of market share, while Sony trailed behind at number four. Paramount rounded out the top five, with a 5% increase in domestic ticket sales from last year.
