Box Office Surprise: Moana 2 and Wicked Dominate Weekend

A new wave of movies hit theaters over the Thanksgiving weekend, but in a surprising turn of events, Disney’s animated sequel “Moana 2” and musical drama “Wicked” took the top spots at the box office. Despite initial expectations, both films brought in lower-than-expected results. Moana 2 is projected to earn around $50 million, while Wicked should rake in $32 million.

Gladiator II rounded out the top three with a solid $12 million, followed by Red One with $7 million, bringing its total domestic earnings to $85 million. However, the real underdog of the weekend was Indian-made film Pushpa 2 – The Rule, which unexpectedly took fifth place with a $5 million haul.

On the other hand, highly anticipated new releases A24’s “Y2K” and Briarcliff’s “Werewolves” failed to gain traction in the market. Y2K struggled to find an audience, earning just over $2 million for its ninth-place debut, while Werewolves barely made it to the top 10 with a paltry $1.2 million.

In contrast, Christopher Nolan’s “Interstellar,” which was re-released on its 10th anniversary, proved to be a massive success despite being shown exclusively in IMAX theaters on just 165 screens. The film earned an impressive $4.1 million, marking a significant comeback for the critically acclaimed director.
