A surprise upset has sent shockwaves through the box office, as David Ayer’s blue-collar drama A Working Man beat Disney’s live-action retelling of Snow White with a better-than-expected opening. Working Man took in $15.2 million from 3,262 theaters, while Snow White earned $14.2 million from 4,200 locations. This marks a 66% decline for the film compared to its initial weekend.
The loss is attributed to poor word-of-mouth and controversy surrounding actress Rachel Zegler. With a domestic total of $66.8 million domestically and $143.1 million globally, Snow White now sits in bomb territory, considering it cost roughly $370 million to produce.
In contrast, A Working Man’s victory marks a significant win for Amazon MGM Studios, which is embarking on an ambitious journey to become a major Hollywood studio. The film, directed by David Ayer and written with Sylvester Stallone, tells the story of a black ops vet who must rescue his boss’s daughter from human traffickers.
The box office numbers also come as a relief for Amazon MGM, following the surprise ouster of Jennifer Salke, the studio head. This move marks an important juncture in the studio’s journey to become a major player in the industry.
Other notable releases include Fathom’s showing of The Chosen: The Last Supper (Part One) and Universal’s horror entry The Woman in the Yard. A24’s Death of a Unicorn rounded out the top five, earning $5.6 million from 2,842 cinemas.
