Two big box stores are closing their doors in the Midcoast region of Maine. Joann Fabrics will shut down three of its five Maine locations, including Topsham, Waterville, and Auburn. However, its Portland and Bangor stores will remain open.
Nationwide, Joann is closing 500 of its 800 stores as part of a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. The company received court approval in February to close the majority of its locations.
Big Lots is also closing stores in Maine. Several locations were put up for sale last month, including Brunswick, Augusta, and Farmington. However, it’s unclear which stores will remain open under an asset purchase agreement with Gordon Brothers Retail Partners.
Joann stores are currently operating with online shopping available through joann.com, and employees are receiving pay and benefits while the company evaluates its future plans.
