Mexican boxer Julio César Chávez Jr., son of legendary boxer Julio César Chávez, has been arrested by ICE agents on charges of alleged cartel ties and infractions. He was deported from the US over a tourist visa that expired in February 2024.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Chávez Jr. made fraudulent statements on his immigration application and had an active arrest warrant in Mexico for involvement in organized crime and trafficking firearms, ammunition, and explosives.
The boxer’s attorney calls the allegations “outrageous” and claims they are a headline-grabbing tactic to terrorize the community. However, DHS officials claim Chávez Jr.’s connection to the Sinaloa drug cartel through his marriage to a US citizen is concerning.
Chávez Jr. was previously allowed to reenter the country on January 4 but was deemed an illegal immigrant and could be removed until June 27. The arrest comes after he lost a fight against social media influencer Jake Paul in California.
The Trump administration has made deportation of undocumented immigrants its top priority, and Chávez Jr.’s case highlights the consequences for those with alleged cartel ties.
