bp Discovers Oil and Gas at Bumerangue Block Off Brazil Coast

BP has made a significant oil and gas discovery at its Bumerangue block in the Santos Basin, off the coast of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The company drilled exploration well 1-BP-13-SPS to a total depth of 5,855 metres, intersecting the reservoir about 500 metres below the structure’s crest.

The well penetrated an estimated 500 metre gross hydrocarbon column in high-quality pre-salt carbonate reservoir with an areal extent of greater than 300 square kilometres. Elevated levels of carbon dioxide were detected in the rig-site analysis, and BP will now conduct laboratory analysis to further characterize the reservoir and fluids discovered.

This discovery marks bp’s largest in 25 years and is part of the company’s ambitious plans to explore Brazil’s potential for establishing a material and advantaged production hub. BP aims to grow its global upstream production to 2.3-2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day by 2030, with the capacity to increase production up to 2035.

BP holds 100% participation in the Bumerangue block, secured in December 2022 during the 1st Cycle of the Open Acreage of Production Sharing of ANP. The company has already announced several oil and gas exploration discoveries globally, including at Trinidad, Egypt, Libya, and Brazil.
