Cortical Labs has partnered with DayOne to establish two data centers using its “body-in-the-box” CL1 biological computer, which uses 200,000 living brain cells to power it. This innovative technology aims to solve the energy crisis in AI computing by requiring less energy than a calculator, making it an attractive alternative for future data centers.
The CL1 units consist of a silicon chip with lab-grown human neurons that respond to electrical stimuli, forming networks similar to those found in the human brain. The system can learn and adapt, with life-support features keeping the conditions suitable for the neurons to remain alive for up to six months.
This technology has significant potential advantages over traditional computing, especially when it comes to increasing AI capacity without a huge increase in energy consumption. Cortical Labs’ experiments have demonstrated the CL1’s neural networks can process data, learn from it, and adapt, making this collaboration with DayOne promising for real-world deployment.
The partnership marks another milestone in Cortical Labs’ efforts to deploy its technology, which is individually priced at around $35,000 each. With the potential to power multiple data centers, this innovative solution could play a key role in addressing the energy crisis in AI computing.
