Scientists have released the most comprehensive map ever assembled of a mammalian brain, revealing hidden algorithms that underlie its complex functions. The Machine Intelligence From Cortical Networks (MICrONS) consortium has created a 3D reconstruction of a mouse brain’s visual cortex, linking its structure to activity for the first time.
The dataset contains over 84,000 neurons, half a billion synapses, and more than 5.4 kilometers of neural wiring. It was built by imaging a tiny chunk of mouse brain tissue at nanoscale resolution and using AI to stitch individual sections into a complete reconstruction.
