A 30-year-old woman from New England experienced severe leg pain after returning from a three-week trip to Hawaii, Japan, and Thailand. The sensation started in her feet but soon spread to her legs, arms, and even trunk, accompanied by headaches and confusion.
The unusual symptoms were discovered during a case study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Initially, the woman attributed fatigue to jet lag, but as the sensations worsened, she visited the emergency room twice, only to be sent home with negative test results.
However, her partner intervened when the woman began experiencing confusion and disorientation. She was subsequently taken back to the ER, where further testing was conducted. Despite this, no underlying medical condition could be identified.
The case highlights an extremely rare occurrence of a brain parasite infestation, likely contracted during travel, which triggered severe pain and neurological symptoms.
