Brain Tumors Found in 5 Massachusetts Nurses on Fifth-Floor Maternity Unit

A mysterious case has unfolded at Newton-Wellesley Hospital in Massachusetts after five nurses working on the same floor were diagnosed with brain tumors, all of whom are found to have benign tumors. An investigation into the matter is underway, with officials claiming no environmental risks linked to the development of the brain tumors.

According to hospital officials, 11 staff members have been interviewed since April 1, and six others have reported other health concerns. The Occupational Health and Safety team has evaluated each diagnosis in context, conducted comprehensive environmental assessments following CDC guidelines, and found no environmental risks contributing to the brain tumors.

However, the Massachusetts Nurses Association (MNA) claims that hospital’s environmental testing was not comprehensive, stating they received over 300 responses from people working at Newton-Wellesley Hospital. The union is now working to contact those who want a direct follow-up and obtain medical records.

The hospital maintains its top priority is the wellbeing of staff and patients and plans another town hall within the next week. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration was not aware of the situation and had no comment.
