Brain’s Energy Demands Revealed Through Visual System

The human brain is an energy-hungry organ, consuming 20% of the body’s total calories. Surprisingly, nearly half of this energy goes to processing visual information. Researchers studied how much energy our brains spend on viewing different images and found a surprising connection between aesthetics and energy conservation.

They used computer models and over 4,900 images to test if people prefer less-energy-demanding visuals. The results showed that we often choose pictures that require less mental effort, suggesting an unconscious “energy-saving” strategy in our aesthetic preferences.
