Brandon Staley Named New Orleans Saints Defensive Coordinator

Former Los Angeles Chargers head coach Brandon Staley is joining the New Orleans Saints as their new defensive coordinator, according to reports. This marks a significant role reversal for Staley, who previously served as an assistant coach under rookie head coach Kellen Moore with the Chargers in 2023. The reunion between Moore and Staley comes after a tumultuous tenure for Moore in Los Angeles, where he was fired despite a 24-24 record. Staley’s experience includes stints as outside linebackers coach with the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos, as well as time as defensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams in 2020.

The Saints are seeking a turnaround after failing to make the postseason since 2020. Under Staley’s guidance, they will look to fortify their defense, which ranked last season at 30th in yards allowed. Notable players such as Carl Granderson, Cameron Jordan, and Demario Davis provide a solid foundation for Staley to build upon. However, the team’s salary cap situation presents challenges, with an estimated $54.1 million overage. Nevertheless, Staley brings proven experience and familiarity to the Saints’ coaching staff, aiming to lead the defense to improved results in the 2025 season.
