Braves’ Sean Murphy Out for Start of Season Due to Injury

Atlanta Braves starting catcher Sean Murphy will be sidelined for four to six weeks due to a cracked rib injury on his left side. The team announced the news Monday, which marks the beginning of their season on March 27 against San Diego. Top prospect Drake Baldwin is expected to replace Murphy behind the plate. Murphy struggled last season after an abdominal strain, batting .193 with 10 homers and 25 RBIs in 72 games. He had previously been the Braves’ No. 1 catcher but was surpassed by Chadwick Tromp during the offseason. Murphy made the National League All-Star team in 2023 and won a Gold Glove award at catcher in 2021, playing for the Oakland Athletics before joining the Braves in 2019.
