Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is recovering in an intensive care unit after a 12-hour surgery due to recurring intestinal issues since he was stabbed while campaigning in 2018. The 70-year-old conservative leader is awake and doing “very well” with minimal hospital visits planned for now, according to doctors at the DF Star Hospital.
Bolsonaro’s recent abdominal pains forced him to cancel a regional tour aimed at drumming up support ahead of a Supreme Court trial. He was hospitalized on Friday and transferred to Brasilia over the weekend. The surgery, his fifth since 2018, did not have unexpected complications, and the result is satisfactory, doctors said.
Despite prior surgeries and the stab wound, Sunday’s procedure progressed smoothly, with limited hospital visits expected in the coming days.
