A 26-year-old Brazilian tourist, Juliana Marins, has been found dead after falling hundreds of meters from Mount Rinjani, an active volcano on the Indonesian island of Lombok. The tragedy occurred while Marins was summiting with a guide and five other foreigners.
Marins’ family in Brazil confirmed her death, which was confirmed by Indonesian authorities after four days of searching for her. The rescue team used a thermal drone to locate her body beside a crater. The search was complicated by harsh terrain and weather conditions.
Brazil’s Foreign Ministry called Marins’ death a tragedy, while also accusing the Indonesian government of misinforming her family about her location and condition. However, there was no immediate response from the Indonesian government on this claim.
Marins, a dancer from Rio de Janeiro, had been traveling across Asia since February, visiting several countries including the Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand. Her death has captured the attention of millions in Brazil, who followed the dramatic search-and-rescue efforts online.
