Mikey Madison has won the best actress Oscar for her role in “Anora,” a film that catapulted her to fame after her initial success on television. The 25-year-old actor beat out Hollywood veteran Demi Moore, who was also nominated for her performance in “The Substance.”
Madison’s victory marks a huge night for the Brooklyn-set comedy-drama, which won five Oscars, including best picture and directing honors for Sean Baker. In an acceptance speech, Madison expressed her gratitude to the sex worker community, saying she will continue to support and be an ally.
Born Mikaela Madison Rosberg in Los Angeles, Madison grew up in a family of psychologists but never felt connected to Hollywood until she discovered acting. She began training in competitive horseback riding before finding solace in acting’s collaborative nature.
The film “Anora” premiered at Cannes last year, winning the Palme d’Or, and has since gained momentum with its box-office success. Madison has nine films to her credit since her debut in 2017, including roles in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” and the horror franchise “Scream.”
When asked about her future projects, Madison said she wants to continue making movies that inspire her as an actor and creative. After the ceremony, she plans to spend time with her new puppies and clean up their mess, bringing her back down to earth.
The other nominees for best actress included Cynthia Erivo for “Wicked,” Karla Sofía Gascón for “Emilia Pérez,” and Fernanda Torres for “I’m Still Here.”
