Breakthrough Probiotic Treatment for Autism Symptoms Identified

Chinese scientists have made a groundbreaking discovery in the fight against autism. Researchers identified a specific probiotic, Lactobacillus murinus, found in dairy products like cheese and yogurt, which may help alleviate and even reverse some autism symptoms.

The study used genetically modified mice prone to autism-like behavior, and after administering the probiotic for 30 days, they showed significant improvements. The mice’s brains became more flexible and adaptable, enabling them to learn and remember better. The treatment also led to recovery of their intestines and genes impacted by the disorder.

One in 36 children in the US has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, its cause remains unknown, and research points to growing pollution and chemical contamination affecting pregnant mothers’ bloodstreams and developing fetuses. The current treatments include behavioral and speech therapies, but this new discovery may offer a complementary treatment option with minimal side effects.

The probiotic Lactobacillus murinus has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties, as well as been found to ease depression. The study’s findings suggest that the bacteria can improve ASD-related social behavior deficits through gut-brain communication. This breakthrough aligns with previous research showing that Lactobacillus murinus rescues behavioral deficits.
