Scientists have discovered a potential new treatment for hereditary-patterned baldness, the most common cause of hair loss worldwide. The breakthrough came from research on deoxyribose sugar, a naturally occurring compound found in DNA.
Studies conducted at the University of Sheffield and COMSATS University in Pakistan showed that applying deoxyribose gel to male mice with testosterone-driven hair loss resulted in significant hair regrowth. In fact, the treatment was found to be as effective as minoxidil, a common topical treatment for hair loss.
According to researchers, the deoxyribose gel works by boosting blood supply to hair follicles and encouraging hair growth. The treatment also showed promise in promoting 80-90% hair regrowth in mice with male pattern baldness.
While the study was conducted on male mice, researchers believe that further research could lead to a treatment effective for female mice as well. If successful, deoxyribose gel could be used to treat alopecia and stimulate hair growth following chemotherapy.
The discovery is promising, but more research is needed. The current treatment has shown potential in early-stage trials, warranting further investigation into its effectiveness and safety.
