Boston Red Sox infielder Alex Bregman has made it clear that he’s focused on helping the team win, not worrying about where he plays on the diamond. Speaking with reporters on Tuesday afternoon, Bregman downplayed concerns about his new teammate Rafael Devers wanting to be the everyday starting third baseman.
Devers expressed his desire for the position, but Bregman remained calm, saying “I’m super excited to just be his teammate. He’s a great player.” Bregman emphasized that his primary focus is on winning, and he’ll play wherever manager Alex Cora tells him to.
Despite having played almost exclusively at third base in his career, Bregman is seen as a potential fit for playing second base for the Red Sox. However, there’s also a logical argument for keeping Bregman at third base and moving Devers off the position. Bregman has won a Gold Glove at third base, while Devers has struggled with errors.
Bregman didn’t hint at any tension between him and Devers, saying their interactions have been “great” and they’ve done some drill work together. Both players seem to understand where each other is coming from, but it’s unclear how the situation will play out as the season progresses.
