Boston Red Sox third baseman Alex Bregman is making a strong case for himself as one of the top free agents in the market, according to former baseball general manager Jim Bowden. Bregman has been impressive this season, with a .304 average and 11 home runs through 191 at-bats. His current contract with the Red Sox pays him $40 million this year and includes two more years at the same rate.
Bowden predicts that Bregman will opt out of his deal, which would make him eligible for free agency in the offseason. This could create a significant surplus of talent at third base, including Rafael Devers, who may be looking to return to his position if Bregman signs elsewhere. The Red Sox could then use some of the saved money to pursue other high-profile free agents like Kyle Tucker.
Bowden notes that Bregman’s market should be even more robust this year due to his popularity among multiple teams, including the Yankees, Tigers, Astros, Phillies, and Dodgers. He believes Bregman would be an upgrade for all these teams at third base and could attract significant interest from suitors in the offseason. As a result, Bregman’s time with the Red Sox may be coming to an end sooner rather than later.
